WORLD DISABILITY MONTH: December

“We shall overcome

We shall overcome someday,

Deep in my heart, I do believe

We shall overcome someday…”

Life is not easy to live. A lot of struggles we all have to face, to survive in this world. And it becomes more difficult for the persons with disability, because disability hinders people to do certain activities or interact with the world around them. But after all, human being is the most intelligent and wise among living beings and possesses the strength to overcome all difficulties. So, recent advancement of medical science and technology has successfully helped the disabled persons to live a better life. But not only the help of technology, they also need to stop facing discrimination and isolation from their surroundings and society to live a healthier life. In order to increase awareness about disability around the world, United Nations(UN) celebrates 3rd December as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) since 1992. Throughout this month of December, various awareness camps and programs are held around the world, which leads the month of December to be called as World Disability Month. Best Hearing Aid Centre.

The definition of disability goes as,

“A physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person’s ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in daily activities and interactions(Merriam-Webster)”. Discussions about disability are so important because it is a part of being human. Almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life. According to WHO, over one billion people-about 15% of the global population-live with some form of disability and this number is increasing. Most of them live in developing countries. The number is expected to grow due to factors such as conflict, aging, natural disasters and stunting. There exists various kinds of disabilities. Deafness, blindness, an intellectual disability, partially or completely missing limbs or mobility impairments requiring use of a wheelchair, autism, cancer, cerebral palsy etc. And many more conditions are concluded to be disabilities. Compared to others, persons with disabilities face higher rates of poverty. When accessing basic services, they encounter biases and barriers. Due to marginalization and poverty of disabled persons, their condition worsens. To build up Disability Inclusive Development and to ensure a better future for the persons with disability, WHO celebrates 3rd December as “a day for all”. This theme reflects a growing understanding of that old truth which says that disability is part of human condition. Almost everyone will be impaired at some point in life, temporarily or permanently. In 2020, the theme of UN was “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”. Amidst the global crisis of COVID-19, people with disabilities are among the hardest hit in this crisis. For progressing towards sustainable future, world disability month focuses to develop disability inclusion, which will result in a COVID-19 response and recovery that better serves everyone, more fully suppresing the virus, as well as building back better. Through the disability inclusion strategy, UN reaffirms that the complete realization of the human rights of disabled persons is an inalienable and integral part of all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
